Weekly Skinny

Let’s start off on the right foot
“If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”
—John F. Kennedy

The skinny

We talk about it all the time—diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Understanding differences, looking for new perspectives and helping to bring forward other opportunities to learn helps to foster a safe and accepting environment in the workplace.  As HR Professionals it’s important to recognize that employee’s ways of celebrating are unique to the individual, and accepting unique perspectives, experiences, and identities makes for worthwhile workplaces.

Juneteenth

Recognizing Juneteenth allows organizations to honor diversity, promote cultural understanding, and reinforce their commitment to social responsibility. The first step is education, and with that, acknowledging the historical struggles and achievements of the Black community. After promoting awareness and fostering unity, workplaces can then take the necessary action to ensure that employees of color have opportunities to succeed, be promoted, and have a seat at the table.

Thriving

By embracing DEIB initiatives, organizations have incredible growth opportunities. The business case for these efforts cannot be overstated. $2 billion in potential revenue is on the table if financial inclusion efforts broaden services for Black Americans. Plus, when people feel a sense of belonging, employee retention rates soar, resulting in substantial cost savings for businesses.

Take a break

The first day of summer is Wednesday the 21st!
One of HR’s main priorities is reducing burnout, which is typically higher among under-represented groups, such as people of color and women. Thoughtful gestures of flexibility, encouraging employees to take time away, and providing scheduled mindfulness exercises are only a few things to do. Prioritizing the mental well-being of all employees, especially those from diverse backgrounds, creates a nurturing workplace that benefits everyone.

Great minds think unalike

“Diversity is innovation. If someone doesn’t look like you, they don’t think like you, and that often means they can help you. Think different!”—Duncan Wardle

Commencement

Making the world safe for diversity is something that John F. Kennedy remarked in a commencement speech at American University 60 years ago this June. In it he talked about peace, empowering the graduates to seek out “the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living.” As we think about all the important events in the month of June, we accept and celebrate everything that makes workplaces worthwhile for everyone.
