Let’s start off on the right foot

From Easter to Passover to Ramadan, April is full of diverse cultural celebrations.

Sunrise to sunset.

Spring is full of opportunities to educate employees on other cultures and further inclusivity. We’re halfway through Ramadan, and our Muslim friends and colleagues have a couple more weeks of daylight fasting to go. Those who observe Lent, Passover, and Yom Kippur also take part in fasting, a ritual to encourage reflection and self-restraint.

Me, myself, and I.

Like any other sensitive topic, while you’re showing sincere support, it’s best not to make assumptions about other people. Employees’ faith and how they practice is deeply personal. For employees observing Ramadan, flexibility can be life changing. When organizational culture is already infused with empathy, employees will feel safer approaching their managers to talk about flexibility and time off.

Someone in your corner.

Psychological safety is a big topic these days as more and more employees prioritize mental health over everything else. Nope, it doesn’t mean you have to tip-toe around employees’ feelings. Instead, psychological safety encourages people to take risks and speak openly without fearing negative consequences. Mistakes, believe it or not, are good and can help push teams forward with new learnings.

IDK.

Whether participating in a month-long fast and reflection, or simply struggling to fall asleep, it’s difficult to fully understand all that people are going through. Offering accommodations, like a dedicated prayer time is easy to do and can help individuals feel seen and valued. When flexibility is the status quo and empathy is the default response to the unexpected, inclusivity excels.

Until April 21.

Ramadan continues for another two weeks, so there’s still time to do some fun trivia or cultural training. Consider scheduling meetings earlier in the day when fasting colleagues may have more energy. When in doubt, just ask! There are so many different ways to offer support.
