When the worst happens, are your perks and policies helping employees grieve?

If you haven’t binged The Crown, let’s catch you up. Born third in line to the throne, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was never supposed to be Queen. Her uncle, Edward VIII renounced royalty to marry an American divorcée… practically blasphemous in 1936. 

326 days.  

His scandalously short rule set in motion what would be the longest monarchal reign in British history. Elizabeth II served for 70 years and 214 days, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and duty.  

11 hours. 

Until Monday, over a half million mourners across the UK are paying their respects with wait times in the double digits. Sparing no expense to honor a lifetime of service, this four-day event is racking up quite the bill.  

Gulp.  

Sure, most funerals aren’t global affairs, but they’re still emotionally and financially draining on families. The national average cost is $7,848. A hefty price tag to face while making burial arrangements and grieving the loss of a loved one.  

Sorry kids, no more allowance. 

It seems the cost of dying is increasing just the same as the cost of living. End-of-life care, including hospice facilities or skilled nursing care, can cost upwards of $500 per day. The unprepared can’t afford to die. 

Can you feel the cortisol yet? 

You’re stressed just reading about it, aren’t you? In life and death, confusion is costly.  

Employers play a critical role in helping employees understand the benefits, programs, and resources available to them.   

Okay, how? 

Life and burial insurance are obvious benefits that can offset funeral price tags. But voluntary benefits of all kinds set the stage for financial security. Renewed bereavement policies are equally important, giving employees the time and energy to make those tough decisions.

Organizations can take inspiration from the late Queen. Company culture creates something like a legacy. This legacy takes care of your employees and could have quite an effect on the boomerang population.
