This week at the People’s Choice Awards, Lizzo not only earned song of the year, but was also presented with the People’s Champion award. Like Dwayne Johnson and Muhammad Ali, this accolade is given to those who act with integrity and build others up.

Leaders at all levels need a strategy ASAP to build up their team and bolster morale. On the personal side and professionally, many of us are reflecting on this year’s projects and digging for the motivation to smash our goals in 2023. Stress and uncertainty, however, can make it difficult to maintain momentum on pursuits large and small.

Not another pizza party.

Too often, managers grasp at short term solutions to score smiles and productivity, instead of investigating the root of the problem. Keeping, creating, and motivating high performers comes down to consistent communication: clear role expectations, fair performance discussions, and equal access to opportunities.

The benefits of developing a culture of feedback are twofold. RE: evaluations, regular feedback prevents recency bias and provides space for people to feel heard. Plus, a genuine back-and-forth with employees will produce invaluable suggestions from folks “on the ground” to improve the organization operations, policies, and overall culture.

In fast-paced and remote workplaces, the manager-employee rapport can easily become strained. But workers who feel supported and trusted by their manager are more than three times more engaged with their work.

It takes a village.

In 2023, great managers will break down barriers to work just as much as they foster connections with employees. Leaders, however, are only as effective as the organization behind them. HR teams must also be a champion of people to create an excellent work culture.
