This time of year, it seems the only thing we like better than all things pumpkin spice is all things pigskin.

For proof, you don’t need to look any further than our devotion to fantasy football. The average fantasy player spends three hours per week managing their team, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. The regular NFL season lasts 17 weeks, which equals an average 50 hours on fantasy football each season. For perspective, that’s 157 times the 19 minutes or less that many American employees spend selecting their benefits.

There’s nothing wrong with being dedicated to fantasy football – at Businessolver, we have our own office league. But our mission is to transform benefits from a “choose” experience to a “use” experience. We want to work with organizations to help shift employees’ mindset toward year-round engagement.

To do that, we have to start with Annual Enrollment. Ensuring employees feel informed and prepared to make solid benefits picks for themselves and their families is just as critical as making smart fantasy picks. Along those lines, we’ve previously shared strategies to consider for successful benefits communication and education.

But if you don’t already have an ongoing education plan, no worries. There are still plenty of easy, quick-turn tactics to make sure your employees have a successful Annual Enrollment and are set-up for year-round success. Here are our top three suggestions:

  • Create a mini playbook: Send an all-employee email that outlines the basics of your different benefits offerings, as well as a glossary of terms that employees should be aware of when going through the enrollment process. This will provide employees with an easy-to-access resource that they can reference before and during enrollment when last minute questions arise.
  • Make the most of the preseason: Set aside a couple of hours each week leading up to annual enrollment when employees can stop by to ask questions and talk through their benefits options. Face-to-face communication is often preferred, so employees will value the chance to meet in-person and ask questions.
  • Practice a two-minute drill: Annual Enrollment is the busiest and most high-profile time of year for you and your team. Take time to huddle and make sure everyone is aligned with your execution strategy, talking points, and action items – including senior leaders. Making yourself available for questions is key to a smoother enrollment process. If you don’t have time to host office hours, simply send a friendly reminder that you and your team are available to answer questions – it’s likely enough to encourage employees to reach out and get the information they need.

Inevitably, there will always be a few bumps here and there during annual enrollment. Hopefully, with communication and support, your employees will feel more prepared for enrollment and inspired to engage with benefits year-round. And when you really just need a break from it all, go ahead. Check your Fantasy Football team – we won’t tell.
